Turning Your Home into Your Haven

Turning Your Home into Your Haven

Your home should be a place that you look forward to coming back to. It should provide you a sense of relief after a long work day and familiar comfort after a vacation; more than just a place to house your things. Creating a haven out of your home takes some effort, but it can play a big role in de-stressing, boosting your mood, and becoming proud of this place you call home.

  1. Ambient lighting

Although your home may come with standard overhead lighting, that doesn’t mean that you have to keep it at that. Overhead lighting can sometimes be too bright and harsh for certain areas. In rooms like your living room or bedroom, try adding some side table lamps or an arching floor lamp. This ambient lighting will make the space feel warmer and cozier as you watch TV, read, or lounge around.

  2. Work with the seasons

Even if you don’t go wild for seasonal décor, you can still make subtle changes around your home to play on the different seasons. For the fall, try incorporating warmer tones and cozy textiles. In the winter, bring out some twinkly lights and cold-weather plants. As the spring rolls around, take advantage of the newly blooming flowers and swap out the heavy blankets and pillows for lighter fabrics. When summer arrives in full effect, this is your chance to open up to the outdoors, let in the fresh air, and bring in more colour and wall décor that will play with the morning sun.

  3. Keep work areas out of sight

Now that remote and hybrid work is the norm, many people have created designated work areas in their home, which makes it difficult to separate work from leisure at the end of the day. If you’re able to have a home office, keep this room closed off when it’s not in use and decluttered at night to start fresh each morning. If your work area is immersed in your living space, try to shut off or put away your computer and clear off your work surface when the day is done.

  4. Play with scents

Adding scents throughout your home can be a great way to set the mood, lift your spirits, or wind down at night. You could play around with lighting some candles, turning on an essential oil diffuser, or setting up a simmer pot on occasion.
